L'Empereur (#8)

Let me just get this out of the way. ReyVGM is one persistent motherfucker. I went on indefinite video game hiatus a month or so ago for several reasons. I was a lazy no good around the house when it came to chores, most likely because I was up to 2am in the morning beating these bottom of my crusty video game barrel games trying to knock the final 11 off my list. Usually I would have to wake up for work several hours after going to bed or spend the day taking care of my twins, which sometimes can be harder than work depending on how much energy they have that day.

So Rey, who unfortunately will be retiring from the NES video gaming scene once he procures the few remaining ending pics he needs, keeps churning out codes and info on various games and now decides he's going after Koei's ball bag. Without getting into specifics he not only figures out how to hamstring opponents in these games by setting their food supply to ZERO, making any opponent instantly ineffective, but he figures out that each land (there are like 40+ lands in L'Empereur) has their own individual codes for everything: food, gold, soldiers, prostitutes, boats, commerce...you name it. He spends what must have been hours posting this shit to thegshi.org for the gaming community's disposal and gets rewarded with little fanfare, other than the usual praise from me and grand master G-Force (who may end up beating all the games before I do!). Years from now some dude is gonna wonder how the hell he can beat L'Empereur and will stumble across the hundreds of codes Rey made for this and will wonder who this code king was.

By the way, Rey, don't die on us before making Gemfire codes. And don't forget to thank the mods when they get around to adding the codes to the site or they will become angry and self-righteous even though you are the one fueling their site with your body of work ;)

I forget where I was headed with this shit...

*looks back at 1st paragraph*

Oh yeah, so anyway, in true Godfather fashion, I get pulled back into the video gaming zone. For a good month I was getting 8-9 hours of sleep, being a great dad, getting shit done around the house. Gutters got cleaned out, got a guy to put in a garbage disposal my wife's been begging me for, went through my closets and drawers and got rid of about half of my clothes I'd been hoarding for over 10 years that no longer fit because I am getting fatter and older (37 fucking years old tomorrow...wtf!?!). I even found the cool shirt stuffed in the back of the dresser that says PLEASE TELL YOUR TITS TO STOP STARING AT MY EYES! Now that's fucking class right there I tell ya! I've had a ton of energy at work and just basically have been getting it done and making the wife happy.

So thanks Rey for sucking me back in and turning me into the sluggish zombie I was a couple months ago. I owe you one buddy! Honorable mention goes out as well to the aforementioned GarrettForce for the occasion gaming related email that I take way too long to reply to, yet keeps me anchored in the gaming zone.

In all seriousness, I'm down to 7 games left to beat because of Rey and he has my eternal gratitude for making this 20+ year quest to see every US NES game ending a reality, even though I have to cheat like hell to get through these last few games.

Sorry Austria.

Oh yeah, I was putting stuff up in my garage and a long, heavy box slid off some boxes and landed at my feet. Miracle...Piano...Teaching...System...

  1. Hahaha, awesome blog. Now I feel bad for making you a bad dad again.

"PLEASE TELL YOUR TITS TO STOP STARING AT MY EYES"

That's awesome, don't throw that out haha.

  2. Oh yeah, I think VGM will be the only place on the English speaking internet that will have screenshots of the Koei game endings. Not even youtube or niconico have videos of those endings!

  3. I'm surprised niconico doesn't have any Koei endings, though I could have sworn I saw a Famicom ending compilation on there once that did have one or two Koei endings on it. Guess Koei fans can't be bothered to record the endings. Still Youtube does have the ending to Bandit Kings of Ancient China.

Unfortunately the credits are messed up in that video. Adam told me the same thing happened to him when he beat it. I don't know if its an emulation bug, or if the game is badly dumped. It would be nice if there was a way to easily test the ending in different emulators.

Its pretty amazing how many cheats you contributed to thegshi rey. You must have a hell of a lot of patience, as usually the best I can manage is infinite health, lives or invinciblity on occasion. I used your cheats to see the ending to Famicom Wars recently. Did you know if you play through the game as the Blue Moon Army, they have a different ending than the Red Star Army? Luckily your cheat is easily compatible with the second player side by just switching the FF and 00 values.

I also remember trying to make cheats for Genghis Khan a year ago, and discovering the hard way that every country/land in these games has their own value. I made my own infinite turns code, and had unlimited food, gold, and troops and was all set to tear shit up, only to find out this stuff only applied to country 1. I was sort of able to work around it using 1 as a base, and using the unlimited turns to move things around from country to country in order to attack/advance/etc but it was tedious. Anyway huge respect for your cheat finding skills.

  4. I just beat Genghis Khan last night using the same tactic as Arnold. The next day I read this old post and comments and learn that someone else used the same method, pretty cool.

I though I'd never beat Genghis Khan or Shingen the Ruler but Rey made cheat and button codes for each game.

Now I have 2 Romances, 2 Nombunagas, Gemfire, L'Emperur, and about 25 other dungeon crawling or RPGs left. I'm not traveling for this summer vacation so I predict I'll be down to 10 games by end of August. I also predict Adam will be a piano virtuoso by then too.

  5. A year later I find this site...

I think Gemfire was the easiest of the Koei games to beat once you learned how the computer operates.

I tried the L'Empereur codes today on Nestopia but haven't been able to get them to work. Any ideas?

  6. Hey Pontiff, good to see someone still reading this...I also noticed my comment while re-reading this about how I was "making the wife happy." This thing got posted on 5/30/11 and she told me she wanted a divorce some time in June...guess she wasn't that happy ;)

Anyway, I'm not really sure why the codes aren't working in Nestopia. I only use FCE Ultra and am not familiar with most other emulators but maybe if Rey sees this he can send you some advice.

I never did get around to finishing Uncharted Waters or Silent Service. Damned water games.

  7. All right I have the FCE Ultra port on the Wii and L'Empereur is my favorite NES game. So how do I use the codes?

  8. You can find the codes here:
    http://gamehacking.org/?s=v2&sys=5&gid=10137
There is a cheat menu in FCE Ultra. The first part of the code is the address while the 2 numbers in the 2nd part of the code is the value for that address. It's hard for me to explain hex values and such, but if you can't figure it out there should be stuff you can google that will help.
